The Juice

Plenish doesn’t add sugar or preservatives, a common addition to many store-bought juices, which is a pleasant surprise. Plenish treat their juices via HPP (High-Pressure Processing) whereby juices are placed into a tank which is filled with water and applied with extremely high levels of pressure to remove potentially harmful bacteria. This process extends shelf life and does so without preservatives.

Plenish claims HPP treatment is good for preserving key vitamins, minerals, and enzymes typically destroyed via typical UHT (Ultra High Temperature) treatment. This is technically true as UHT treatment removes much of the nutrient value of juice, but HPP isn’t as great as Plenish makes it out to be.

When juice is pressurised via HPP, heat is generated. According to the FDA, “HPP treatment will increase the temperature of foods through adiabatic heating approximately 3°C per 100 MPa.” When juice is treated via HPP, it can be pressurised up to 600 Mpa. This means the juice can be heated up to 18°C from its starting temperature. Heat deteriorates the nutrient value and enzyme activity in juice, stripping it of maximum potential health benefits.

Studies conducted immediately after the HPP process have shown that the remaining nutrient content is between 87-100%, while enzyme residual activity, which varies depending on the enzyme tested and the settings of the HPP process, lies within the range of 20-60%. Since this study is conducted immediately after the HPP process, it's difficult to tell whether these values hold up after the several weeks it could take to be purchased and consumed.

Make Your Own

So how can we avoid losing precious nutrients and enzymes and maximise the potential benefits of drinking juice? Making juice at home is the best bet and is very straightforward and convenient if you have a quality juicer. For the best quality juice at home, we recommend the Hurom H400, Revo 830 and the Sana 878.  Quality masticating juicers retain maximum nutrients through slow-juicing technology, utilising low RPMs to minimise heat generation and oxidation, two major factors in nutrient loss.
Juicing at home also saves significant amounts of money compared to regularly purchasing juice from stores. For a look into the savings achievable with home juicing, read our Cost Comparison: Home Juicing vs Joe & The Juice. Home juicing also reduces the environmental impact of your juice. Although the Plenish bottles are made from 100% recycled PET, the caps and labels are not. This contributes to pollution with every purchase, especially considering the impact of producing these single-use plastic bottles and the entire supply chain’s impact.

And it’s hard to ignore the mysterious nature of where ingredients used in these store-bought juices originate. Home juicing ensures you have total control over every single ingredient going into your juice and complete confidence that your juice is of the utmost quality.

It’s not rocket science either! To create delicious, refreshing juices at home just like the ones offered by Plenish, you don’t need intricate commercial juicing setups or exotic ingredient lists. Here are some of our favourite recipes:
