The Juice
Plenish doesn’t add sugar or preservatives, a common addition to many store-bought juices, which is a pleasant surprise. Plenish treat their juices via HPP (High-Pressure Processing) whereby juices are placed into a tank which is filled with water and applied with extremely high levels of pressure to remove potentially harmful bacteria. This process extends shelf life and does so without preservatives.
Plenish claims HPP treatment is good for preserving key vitamins, minerals, and enzymes typically destroyed via typical UHT (Ultra High Temperature) treatment. This is technically true as UHT treatment removes much of the nutrient value of juice, but HPP isn’t as great as Plenish makes it out to be.
When juice is pressurised via HPP, heat is generated. According to the FDA, “HPP treatment will increase the temperature of foods through adiabatic heating approximately 3°C per 100 MPa.” When juice is treated via HPP, it can be pressurised up to 600 Mpa. This means the juice can be heated up to 18°C from its starting temperature. Heat deteriorates the nutrient value and enzyme activity in juice, stripping it of maximum potential health benefits.
Studies conducted immediately after the HPP process have shown that the remaining nutrient content is between 87-100%, while enzyme residual activity, which varies depending on the enzyme tested and the settings of the HPP process, lies within the range of 20-60%. Since this study is conducted immediately after the HPP process, it's difficult to tell whether these values hold up after the several weeks it could take to be purchased and consumed.
